ColourShow by Maybelline – lets consumers virtually try on nail shades

Final Idea Explained :

The camera will be pointed at someone’s face and it will be aligned in a vague facial outline. The makeup will then be highlighted and icons will pop up which the user can click on to show information about the makeup including colour, brand, price and tutorials on how to create that specific look.

Then in the corner (just like on the ordinary camera) there will be the icon to change to the front camera. It will ask the user to align their face in the outline again and then match try that same makeup look on their own face. The user will be able to remove any areas that they do not like, take a selfie and send to their friends or share their new look on Facebook.

Initial Ideas!

Brief :

This is an open brief sponsored by visual search outfit Blippar. They want your ideas and your creativity. They will be judging and giving out a prize to the most creative and innovative response to this brief.

Initial Ideas :

  • Fashion – To point your camera at an item of clothing in a book/magazine or on an actual person and it will tell you where it is from, the price, nearest stores, the various styles/colours, similar products for a cheaper price.

– Make it more fun : Map to show where that particular item of clothing has been worn recently/examples & suggestions of what to where with it/which celebrities have recently worn something similar/which of your friends have it

  • Food – Point the camera to a meal and it will deconstruct it showing each ingredient it includes, nutritional information and what ingredients you could substitute to make a healthier version

Final Idea :

Point the camera at someones face to get their makeup look!

For example, if you like the way someone’s makeup has been done you can point the camera at them to find out what makeup they are wearing. This includes the type of makeup, colour, brand, price and tutorials on how to recreate this look.

You can then switch to the front camera and it will try that same look on you – you can remove certain aspects that you don’t like and then take selfie to ask your friends for their thoughts.

Interaction Design – Branding

I had some trouble trying to think of a name for a concept and connecting it with some sort of brand.

At first I thought of Crayola, but quickly realised they already have their own digital brand and tend to only use their own products (crayons).

I then thought that because I am using an iPad I could use Apple as a brand. However I quickly realised that Apple have a very distinct style and this was quite hard to replicate in my own designs, especially because it is for kids. Apple is very modern and appeals more to tech-savy teens and adults.

I then looked at different Botanical Gardens etc. and decided to go with Kew, Royal Botanical Gardens. I am trying to find a solution for children being bored when learning about plants etc. and trying to find a way to help them interact with the outside world more. Kew Gardens are very well known, and thus would really benefit from having something that will engage kids more. This will be great for kids with their parents as well as for school trips.

Having found a brand I decided to work on the branding and colour scheme : UWONDER

I decided to call the concept UWonder. Kids are always intrigues by new and exciting things, and the word wondering adds a little bit of mystery and magic into the concept. I thought it also worked well because I could use the word wonder and branch off of that idea for to name the pen and characters (pen – WonderPen, species – WonderCreatures). I thought this would help the children relate more to the whole idea. I chose a very natural/earthy colour scheme. I thought they were bight enough to engage the children but also link well to the natural colours within the botanical garden. I did not want to use blues, pinks etc as I thought the earthy colours would tie in better to the whole theme and look more united and not too distracting.

Interaction Design – Wire Frame

Wire Frame

I created this wire frame for my interactive book, so I know exactly what I need and to give me a simple idea about the layout. I had to think about everything that I needed in order to make the book work, including next buttons, what happens if the kids colour the plant in wrong, instructions button, home button, eraser, end pages etc.

By doing the wire frame before starting my design I knew exactly what needed to be included on each page and I could focus a lot more effectively on the design, including colour schemes etc. I did not have to worry  about missing out any important features, as I could just refer back to my wire frame.

Low Carbon Project – Research

Idea explained – Our idea is to create food packaging labels that go on packaging to tell you where to store that particular item of food in the fridge so that it lasts longer in order to minimise food waste.

What will happen? – the idea is that we will produce all food labels to give to each supermarket. When they package their food they will just have to stick the correct label on.

This process will not be very costly, as all we need to do is produce the labels and they stick them on theirselves. It will not take much time as it will go on at the same time as the other food packaging labels are stuck.

A very affordable and easy attempt to reduce the amount of household food waste.

Low Carbon Project – Initial Ideas!

Carbon

Pitching for the 2016 Low Carbon Entrepreneur competition

Brief :

“We’re after your bright ideas to help reduce carbon emissions in London. Your idea should be original and practical. You should also be clear about how you plan to develop your idea and ultimately turn it into reality. Remember that carbon is emitted from pretty much every action you take everyday – the way you travel, what you eat and what it is packaged in, the water you use, and the clothes you buy. Could you find a better and smarter way?”

Initial Ideas :

2 pipe system in new developments – Each new development in London can be equipped with a two way piping system.

One pipe will be for ‘clean’ water to shower, drink, dishwasher etc.

Second pipe will be for secondary/‘dirty’ water – the water we have used for our shower, dishwasher etc can then be reused for the toilet/washing machine (dirt can be slightly filtered)

Heat detectors – Houses can install heat detectors which detects heat to know whether you are in a certain room. If not it will automatically turn off the lights in that room

Cooking  Food packaging can have a special bar code that the oven can scan and set exactly the right temperature saving as much energy as possible.

Initial stages – ‘Final Idea’ (to be refined) :

Home carbon controlling app

An app that sends you a notification that alerts you if you leave the house and have left a light/heating/gas on so that you can switch it off from the app.

The app will contain different categories for heating, water, gas, electrics – in each category there are facts on how to be more carbon/energy efficient in those areas

The app will tell you the temperature of your house and alerts you when it gets to a certain temperature so that you can turn the heating off

There would need to be some kind of sensor in the house, maybe a ball that changes colour depending on the temperature of the house (red = too hot, blue = too cold, purple = just right). Otherwise a sensor that can be fitted into the ceiling of your house that has sensors as well as a thermometer and is able to control heating and electrics.

Grouping :

In order to make this idea work, I will need to have a strong design team. Myself and Elizabeth came up with the initial idea, but will need help with the design and build.

Product design student – someone to help create the actual sensor for your house and helps with the app development and ideas.

Graphics student – to help with logo design and overall look of the app

Motion graphics student – to help create the app

Choosing a Charity

Sectors/Ideas

  • Animals/birds – people tend to be drawn to animals – there is an emotional connection
  • Africa – passion ——>
  • Elephants ————-> Big topic within Africa at the moment.
  • Poaching ————-> There is a huge problem with poaching
  • Ivory ——————> for ivory.
  • Satao (world’s largest elephant – killed) – recent incident that I can use to conjure emotions from people. They will be able to identify with one specific elephant.

Elephant Voices

Elephant Voices Logo

Why?

  • The website is quite boring to look at – doesn’t make you want to keep reading the website
  • There is way too much information making it look too business like
  • Not enough strong campaigns that make an impact
  • Only 2 ads (posters) – good, but not enough!
  • It definitely doesn’t draw people in (however the logo is strong)

Choosing Products

Collaboration between shampoo & perfume.

What?

Special edition shampoo & conditioner scented with a line of perfume.

Why?

  • Original – I haven’t seen it done before
  • Everyone likes good-smelling hair – incentive to buy the product
  • Good target for women – I am combining 2 everyday products

Perfume Brands :

  • Dior – too strong & overpowering
  • Escada – fruity – good combination with shampoos
  • Lacoste – light, sweet small – well recognised brand

I am choosing Lacoste, as they have a few collections, one of which is the Pink Collection, which is light and fruity. Using a collection will be easier to collaborate and means I can create more than one product – A line/collection, rather than just using the same scent in each shampoo & conditioner.

Shampoo Brands :

  • Alterna Hair Care – Bamboo scented, American, professional – so not easy for people to get their hands on
  • Pureology – American, so hard to buy in the UK, more for professional use
  • Head & Shoulders – too specific (anti-dandruff)
  • Herbal Essences – too scented (will loose the smell of the perfume scent)
  • Aussie – too much of a specific scent
  • Kerastase – more professional
  • Toni & Guy – support specific charities
  • John Freida – limited options to match a collection of scents
  • Loreal – too wide of a range
  • Garnier – too wide of a range/too big
  • Tresemme/Pantene – these seem to be the best option in terms of, easy to get a hold of, good quality but not too professional, well known brand name.

I am choosing Tresemme, as it seems to be slight better rated compared to Pantene. It is a well known, quality brand name that does not have too much of an overpowering scent, so will not overpower the perfume scent that is added.
